Larisa Gerstein

Larisa Gerstein is an Israeli politician, social activist, and singer known for her renditions of songs by renowned Russian poet and songwriter Bulat Okudzhava.

Early Life and Education

Gerstein was born with Ukrainian heritage, but her family was exiled to Kyrgyzstan in 1940 as a result of political repression. She graduated from Leningrad Pedagogical Institute with a degree in chemistry.

Immigration to Israel and Political Career

In 1975, Gerstein and her parents immigrated to Israel. She briefly worked at the Technion in Haifa before marrying Eduard Kuznetsov in 1990. Together, they became involved in the "Svodoba" radio station. Gerstein held the position of Deputy Mayor of Jerusalem and is known for her right-wing political views, opposing compromise in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Social Activism

Gerstein is a dedicated advocate for immigrants from the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). She founded the Bulat Okudzhava Fund in Israel and serves as the Chairperson of the Committee for the Defense of Democracy and Human Rights.

Music and Culture

Since the early 1980s, Gerstein has performed Okudzhava's songs at concerts and events. As an accomplished singer, she has brought the spirit of Okudzhava's poetry to life for Israeli audiences.
