Born in Santa Clara County, California on July 7, 1981, Larisa Oleynik is an American actress of Ukrainian descent. Her father, Roman Oleynik, was a programmer who emigrated from the USSR to the United States. Her mother, Lorreine, is American.
Early Life and Career
Oleynik's passion for acting began at a young age when her aunt suggested she audition for the musical "Les Misérables." At age eight, she landed the role of Cosette in a prominent San Francisco production. Inspired, she began taking acting lessons and acquired an agent.
While attending regular school, Oleynik excelled in tennis, winning the California state championship twice. In 1995, she successfully auditioned for the lead role in the television series "The Secret World of Alex Mack." The show became a top-rated youth series, earning Oleynik two Young Emmy Awards.
Big Screen Debut
Oleynik's film debut came in the comedy "The Baby-Sitters Club" (1995). She portrayed one of seven friends who establish a babysitting business. Following this success, she starred in critically acclaimed films such as "10 Things I Hate About You" (1999), a modern adaptation of Shakespeare's "The Taming of the Shrew."
Oleynik's breakthrough role came with her portrayal of a lesbian in the youth comedy "100 Girls" (2001). In "Dance with Me" (2006), she co-starred as one of two dancers whose bond is tested when one is diagnosed with cancer.
