Larry Hovis: American Singer and Actor
Early Life and CareerLarry Hovis was born on February 20, 1936, in Wapato, Washington. His family later relocated to Houston, Texas, where Hovis developed a passion for singing as a teenager. He performed on "Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts" and later sang in nightclubs throughout the mid-1950s. Hovis also wrote songs and signed with Capitol Records, releasing his debut album around this time. He also appeared in local theater productions.
Broadway and Breakthrough
In 1959, Hovis made his Broadway debut in "From A to Z," showcasing his vocal abilities and comedic talent. Four years later, he moved to California, where he honed his skills as a stand-up comedian and pursued television opportunities.
"Hogan's Heroes" and Beyond
Hovis' breakthrough role came in 1965 when he joined the cast of the sitcom "Hogan's Heroes." He played Sergeant Andrew Carter, one of five Western Allied POWs who used their professional expertise to carry out covert missions. Carter was a skilled artilleryman, and Hovis' character was also depicted as a member of the Sioux and Yakima Nation in various episodes.
Later Career and Legacy
Following "Hogan's Heroes," Hovis appeared on several television shows and created the game show "Liar's Club." He also hosted and participated in the talk show "Yahtzee." In the early 1980s, he toured in the musical "The Best Little Whorehouse In Texas." From the 1990s onward, Hovis taught drama at Texas State University-San Marcos.
Death and Legacy
Larry Hovis passed away in Austin, Texas, on September 9, 2003, at the age of 67. He had been diagnosed with esophageal cancer. Hovis left behind a legacy of entertainment through his music, television appearances, and theater work.
