Building Jysk
In 1979, Larsen opened his first store, setting in motion the creation of the Jysk chain. With his keen business acumen, the company expanded rapidly, reaching over 2,700 stores in 52 countries. In Germany and Austria, the stores operate under the brand name Dänisches Bettenlager.
Business Empire
Beyond Jysk, Larsen's business ventures extended into other furniture-related companies, sushi bars, and hotels under the Lars Larsen Group umbrella. His success earned him a fortune estimated at $4.4 billion by Forbes magazine. He ranked seventh among Denmark's wealthiest individuals and 424th on the Forbes list of global billionaires in 2019.
Philanthropic Endeavors
Larsen's business achievements were not only about wealth accumulation. In 2009, he published a book, "30 Years with Jysk," at his own expense and distributed it to every household in Denmark. He had done the same five years earlier with another book, both of which became number one bestsellers in the country.
Passing the Torch
In June 2019, Lars Larsen stepped down as chairman of Jysk's board of directors after being diagnosed with liver cancer. His son, Jakob Brunsborg, took over as his successor.
Legacy and Farewell
On August 19, 2019, at the age of 71, Lars Larsen passed away at his home in Silkeborg, surrounded by family and loved ones. His legacy lives on through the thriving Jysk stores that continue to bring affordable homeware to millions of people worldwide.
