LaShawn Merritt, an American track and field athlete, is a sprinter specializing in the 400 meters. He is the reigning world and Olympic champion in this event, and his personal record of 43.75 seconds makes him the fifth fastest runner of all time.

Early Life and Career

Merritt was born on June 27, 1986, in Portsmouth, Virginia. He attended Woodrow Wilson High School, where he showed great promise as a junior athlete. In 2004, he won a gold medal in the 400 meters at the World Junior Championships in Athletics and set two junior world records in relay events.

International Success

Merritt joined the American 4x400 meters relay team and helped them win gold at the 2006 World Championships in Moscow. In 2007, he established himself as a top individual athlete by winning a silver medal in the 400 meters at the World Championships. The following year, Merritt defeated his rival Jeremy Wariner to win the Olympic final in Beijing and set a personal record. He also broke the Olympic record as part of the American relay team, posting the second-best time in history.

Doping Scandal and Suspension

In 2009, Merritt became a double world champion at the World Championships in Berlin, winning gold in the 400 meters and the 4x400 meters relay. However, in the winter of 2009-2010, he failed three tests for banned substances.
