Wyoma Tyus: A Sprinter's Legacy
Early Life and CareerWyoma Tyus was born on August 29, 1945, in Griffin, Georgia. She excelled in sprinting at an early age and attended Tennessee State University.
Olympic Triumphs
At the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, Tyus, then 19, equaled the world record in the 100-meter preliminaries and won the gold medal in the final. In 1968 at the Mexico City Games, she shattered the world record with a time of 11.08 seconds in the 100 meters. Additionally, she led the U.S. team to victory in the 4x100-meter relay, setting another world record.
Professional Career
Tyus retired after the 1968 Olympics but returned to the track as a professional. In 1973, she won 8 races out of 18, and in 1974, she won all 22 races she entered.
Later Life
After her professional career, Tyus worked as a coach at Beverly Hills High School. She remains a respected figure in the track and field community. Her accomplishments as a triple Olympic champion and world record holder continue to inspire young athletes.
