Biography of Laura Fortino
Laura Fortino is a Canadian ice hockey player and a member of the Canadian national team. Her 'adult' sports career began relatively recently, and she has yet to fully establish herself in this field, although winning a gold medal at the Sochi Olympics is quite an accomplishment.
Early Career
Fortino showcased her skills as an excellent defenseman in various youth championships. In 2004, she played for the "Hamilton Reps" team, winning silver at the Ontario Provincial Championship. Three years later, as a player for "Stoney Creek," Fortino won a bronze medal at the PWHL Championship. That same year, she added a gold medal to her collection when the team "Ontario Red" successfully defeated all their opponents at the Youth Women's Championship in Kitchener, Ontario.
In 2008, Fortino won two more gold medals, this time as a member of "Stoney Creek" at the provincial championship and the PWHL championship. She also finished the 2007-2008 season as the top-scoring defenseman in the PWHL. The season ended with another gold as Fortino once again played for "Ontario Red," securing victory at the national youth women's championship.
In 2009, "Stoney Creek" could only manage to win silver at the OWHA championship, and Fortino also finished second in the PWHL defenseman rankings that season. She also played for the "Mt. Hamilton Hornets" that year, forming a remarkable partnership with fellow defenseman Kyle Rooney.
College Career
In 2009, Fortino's sporting career reached a new level when she joined the "Cornell Big Red," competing at the NCAA level. It quickly became clear that Fortino was one of the best players, as she made it into the "All-America" ranking as a freshman, becoming the best defenseman in NCAA, the best defenseman for Cornell, and the top rookie of the season. She also played for "Big Red" in the NCAA Championship in 2010, with the team reaching the "Frozen Four" – the semi-finals and final games.
International Success
Fortino also made a name for herself internationally. In 2008, she was included in the Canadian national women's youth team and participated in three games against the United States in Lake Placid. Her international debut was highly successful, as she won silver at the IIHF Women's Youth World Championship in Calgary that same year.
A year later, Fortino joined the national women's youth team again, this time playing three games against the US in Calgary in the "Under-22" category. At the World Championship, she once again played for the Canadian national team in the "Under-18" category, winning another silver medal.
In 2010, Fortino played three games against the US in the "Under-22" category and then represented Canada in the MLP Cup in Ravensburg, Germany. She played for the "Under-22" team and returned home with a gold medal. The following year, Fortino and the Canadian team won gold again at the MLP Cup. In the semi-final game against Russia and the final game against Sweden, Fortino scored goals that contributed to Canada's victories.
In 2014, Laura Fortino was selected for the Canadian Olympic team and won a gold medal at the Sochi Games.
