Lauren Ridloff: Overcoming Deafness to Achieve Greatness

Early Life and Education

Lauren Teruel Ridloff was born on April 6, 1978, in Chicago to Hugh Teruel, a musician and University of Illinois professor, and a mother who was an artist. Diagnosed deaf at age two, Lauren's parents initially suspected developmental delays. However, she was not entirely deaf and mute, and with determination, learned to speak. At age 13, she consciously stopped using her voice to avoid negative stereotypes.

Despite her hearing impairment, Lauren excelled academically. She mastered sign language, graduated from the Chicago School for the Deaf, and continued her education in Washington, D.C., where she honed her skills in ceramics, drama, and cheerleading.

Acting Career

While pursuing her bachelor's degree at Northridge University in California, Lauren realized her passion for acting. She landed her first film role as a sign language consultant in "Wonderstruck" (2017), but director Todd Haynes recognized her on-screen potential. In the same year, she starred as Pearl in "The Wonderstruck," a critically acclaimed drama about two deaf children lost in New York City.

Lauren continued to impress on Broadway, earning a Tony Award nomination for her role in "Children of a Lesser God." To achieve a natural-sounding voice, she underwent vocal coaching and embraced the joy of "owning every part of myself."

In 2018, Lauren joined the cast of "The Walking Dead" as Connie, a resourceful and independent deaf character. She brought her own experiences to the role, fostering a romantic connection with Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus).

Other Projects and Personal Life

Alongside "The Walking Dead," Lauren has starred in "Legacies" and "Sound of Metal," a biopic about a drummer who loses his hearing.

In 2006, she married Douglas Ridloff, a poet and expert in visual storytelling. Together, they founded ASL SLAM, a non-profit organization that hosts cultural events for the deaf community. The couple has two deaf sons and resides in Brooklyn.

"Eternals" and Beyond

Lauren's star continued to rise in 2021 with her portrayal of Makkari in Marvel's "Eternals." The first deaf superhero on screen, Makkari possesses the power of super-speed. Lauren underwent rigorous physical training to embody the role, building both stamina and muscle mass.

With her acting and advocacy work, Lauren Ridloff continues to inspire and break barriers, demonstrating that deafness is a part of her, but not a limitation. Her journey serves as a testament to the power of perseverance, self-acceptance, and the relentless pursuit of dreams.
