Laurent Lamothe is a Haitian politician, former Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Prime Minister of Haiti. Prior to his political career, he was known as one of the founders and CEO of the 'Global Voice Group'. Born in Port-au-Prince, Laurent grew up in a diverse environment, surrounded by science, sports, and art. His older brother, Ruben, was a former captain of the Davis Cup national team, and Laurent himself played tennis for Haiti. After completing his education in the United States, Laurent co-founded the telecommunications company 'Global Voice Group' with Patrice Baker. Initially, the company operated in a small segment of the market but has now become one of the largest providers of technology solutions in developing countries. Laurent's efforts in bringing modern telecommunications technologies to Africa earned him the title of 'Entrepreneur of the Year' by Ernst & Young in May 2008.
Not only involved in entrepreneurship, Laurent also actively participated in the socio-political life of his homeland. He served as a special advisor to President Michel Martelly, stepping away from his entrepreneurial activities to avoid potential conflicts of interest. In September 2011, Laurent and former US President Bill Clinton co-chaired the Presidential Advisory Council for the Economic Development and Investment in Haiti, which aimed to attract foreign investors and contribute to Haiti's development. Later, Laurent was appointed as the Minister of Foreign Affairs. On October 26, 2011, he delivered his first speech in this new role, being regarded as a highly competent and energetic minister and talented entrepreneur who could easily apply his talents for the benefit of the country.
On March 1, 2012, Laurent Lamothe became the Prime Minister of Haiti, appointed by President Michel Martelly. After much deliberation regarding the nationality of several Haitian political figures, a special committee issued a report stating that there were no questions regarding Laurent Lamothe's nationality. On April 10, 2012, his nomination was approved by the Senate, with 19 votes in favor and 3 against. His candidacy was also approved by the Chamber of Deputies. Laurent formally assumed the position on May 4, 2012.
