Biography of Laurie Metcalf
Early Life and CareerLaurie Metcalf, an American actress, was born and raised in Edwardsville, Illinois. She was the eldest of three children in her family. Her father was a university budget director, her mother was a librarian, and her accomplished aunt was a Pulitzer Prize recipient. During her childhood, Metcalf had a deep passion for theater and would put on plays with her friends.
Rise to Fame
Metcalf gained widespread recognition for her performance in the TV series "Roseanne" and as the voice of Mrs. Davis in all three parts of the animated film "Toy Story." She also became a prominent figure in the Chicago theater scene, with her most notable work being her role in the revival of "Balm in Gilead."
Personal Life and Humanitarian Work
Metcalf was involved with a theater actor from the "Steppenwolf" company but later married one of its founders, Jeff Perry. They had a daughter named Zoe in 1984 before divorcing. Metcalf then met Matt Roth on the set of "Roseanne," where he played the character Fisher, a cruel boyfriend. Fate brought them together again on the set of "Desperate Housewives," although their characters were meant to be enemies. They got married in 1993 and became parents to two children, eventually moving to a ranch in Idaho in 2005. Metcalf and her husband are also involved with the humanitarian organization "Planusa.org" and have adopted a son in addition to their own children.
Acting Career
Metcalf studied theater at the University of Illinois and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1977. She began her professional career with the renowned Chicago theater company "Steppenwolf," where she worked alongside fellow students John Malkovich, Glenn Headly, Joan Allen, and Gary Sinise. Metcalf earned the nickname "crazy pants" before making her New York debut in the play "Balm in Gilead" in 1983, for which she received an Obie Award for Best Actress a year later.
Throughout her career, Metcalf has appeared in numerous films, including both critically acclaimed and lesser-known ones. Some of her notable works include "Scream 2," "How to Make an American Quilt," "Leaving Normal," "Georgia Rule," and "Forced Vengeance." In the popular teen slasher film "Scream 2," Metcalf portrayed the ruthless killer's mother, Billy Loomis. She also played the role of Caroline, a woman struggling to cope with her husband's murder and her son's severe injury, in the TV movie "In the Mouth of the Lion."
Metcalf is most famous for her role as the complex intellectual Jackie Harris in the TV series "Roseanne," for which she won three Emmy Awards. She also spent three seasons on the show "Norm" alongside Norm MacDonald and made guest appearances in various other TV series, including "Melrose Place," "Malcolm in the Middle," "3rd Rock from the Sun," "Without a Trace," "Grey's Anatomy," "Dharma & Greg," and "The Big Bang Theory." She recently returned to "Desperate Housewives," which earned her an Emmy and a Satellite Award nomination, and appeared in an episode of "Grey's Anatomy" alongside her ex-husband Jeff Perry. In 2008, Metcalf landed one of the main roles in the dramedy series "Easy Money," but the project was canceled after three episodes. However, she will once again lend her voice to the character of Andy's mom in the third installment of the "Toy Story" franchise, set to release in 2010.
