Biography of Lawrence Albert Payton

Lawrence Albert Payton was an American vocalist, songwriter, and music producer. He was born on May 2, 1938, in Detroit, Michigan. Payton was a member of the popular male vocal quartet 'The Four Tops', which performed rhythm and blues, soul, and popular music for over 40 years.

The Formation of 'The Four Tops'

'The Four Tops' was formed in 1953 in Detroit. Payton, along with lead vocalist Levi Stubbs, Abdul 'Duke' Fakir, and Renaldo 'Obie' Benson, were high school students when they met and started performing together. The group initially called themselves 'The Four Aims', but later changed their name to 'The Four Tops' to avoid confusion with another vocal quartet, 'The Ames Brothers'.

Career Breakthrough

In 1960, while performing in Las Vegas, 'The Four Tops' caught the attention of jazz musician Billy Eckstine, who taught them how to present themselves on stage and make their performances more energetic. In 1963, the group signed a contract with the 'Motown' label and started working with producers and songwriters Brian Holland, Eddie Holland, and Lamont Dozier. This collaboration led to a series of hits, including 'Baby, I Need Your Loving', 'I Can't Help Myself', and 'Reach Out', which topped the charts.

Later Career and Legacy

Throughout their career, 'The Four Tops' worked with various record labels, including 'ABC-Dunhill', 'Casablanca', 'Motown', and 'Arista Records'. They toured extensively with 'The Temptations' and performed on Broadway. Payton was not only a talented singer but also a songwriter. One of his songs was recorded by Aretha Franklin. In 1990, 'The Four Tops' were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. They also received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for their contribution to the music industry.

Personal Life and Legacy

Lawrence Payton was married to Yone Marie Woodfin for 26 years, and they had a son named Sunny Giovanni. He also adopted and raised Yone's two children from a previous marriage, Kimberly and Larry. Additionally, Payton had seven children from other relationships and served as a surrogate father five times. He had 26 grandchildren. Payton passed away on June 20, 1997, from liver cancer at his home in Southfield, Michigan. His son, Roquel Payton, currently sings in the new lineup of 'The Four Tops', and Theo Peoples replaced Payton in the quartet.
