A Heroic Act of Kindness
Lawrence DePrimo, a police officer from New York, unexpectedly became a hero in the eyes of the public after a photo of his act of kindness went viral on the internet. The photo was taken by Jennifer Forest, a tourist from Arizona who happened to be a police officer herself.
A Cold Day in Times Square
On November 14th, while patrolling Times Square, DePrimo noticed a homeless man, Jeffrey Hillman, who was in dire need of footwear. It was an unusually cold day, and Hillman, though wearing multiple pairs of socks, was barefoot. DePrimo took pity on him and decided to take action.
A Random Act of Kindness
DePrimo spoke to Hillman and discovered his shoe size. He then entered a nearby shoe store and purchased a pair of boots for him, spending $75 out of his own pocket. When he returned to Hillman, he sat down next to him and helped him put on the new boots. It was at this moment that Jennifer Forest captured the scene on her phone.
The Internet Goes Wild
Upon returning home, Forest immediately sent the photo she had taken to the New York Police Department. On November 28th, the police department posted the photo on their official Facebook page. The image quickly gained an overwhelming amount of attention, receiving thousands of comments and over 300,000 likes, three times more than the page itself. The comments were overwhelmingly positive, although some criticized the authenticity of the photograph or expressed their general dislike for the police.
The Continuing Story
More recently, the story of DePrimo and Hillman took an unexpected turn when it was discovered that Hillman no longer had the "police boots" that were given to him. This sparked various theories about what had happened to the boots, adding fuel to the argument that the photo was staged. However, regardless of Hillman's motives or the fate of the boots, DePrimo's selfless act of kindness remains a shining example of compassion in a world that often overlooks such acts.
