Early Life and Career Beginnings
Born on January 11, 1992, in Toronto to Brazilian immigrants, Laislai de Oliveira grew up speaking fluent Portuguese. At the age of 14, she was discovered by a casting agent and began modeling, but her aspirations were set on acting.
Despite her dreams of becoming an actress, Oliveira initially doubted if she could make a living from it. She pursued dance at an arts school before venturing into drama classes in high school. She then attended college, secured an agent, and dedicated herself to auditioning daily.
Her first acting roles were small parts in television series such as "Covert Affairs," "Nikita," and "Gothica" in 2012-2013. It wasn't until 2019 that Oliveira made her breakthrough.
Breakthrough with "In the Tall Grass"
In 2019, Oliveira landed a pivotal role in the horror film "In the Tall Grass," based on the novella by Stephen King and Joe Hill. The film follows siblings Cal (Avery Whitted) and Becky (Oliveira) who encounter a lost boy (Will Buie Jr.) and become trapped in a temporal loop.
Working on the set of "In the Tall Grass," Oliveira faced challenging conditions, including getting lost in the tall grass and experiencing hypothermia. However, the film marked a turning point in her career.
Rise to Prominence
Following her breakthrough performance, Oliveira was cast as the lead in Atom Egoyan's "Guest of Honour," which premiered in 2019. The film explores the relationship between a father (David Thewlis) and his daughter Veronica (Oliveira), who has been wrongly convicted of sexual assault.
Oliveira also joined the main cast of "Locke & Key," a horror series based on the graphic novels by Joe Hill. She portrayed Dodge, a mysterious demon trapped in a well. The actress embraced the rarity of women being cast as villains, citing Angelina Jolie's "Maleficent" as her inspiration.
Personal Life
Since 2012, Oliveira has been in a relationship with actor Jonathan Keltz. The couple currently resides in Los Angeles with their rescue dog, Lua. In 2021, Oliveira and Keltz became engaged.
Recent Projects
One of Oliveira's recent projects is the espionage thriller "Lioness," which premiered on Paramount+ in 2023. She stars alongside Zoe Saldana and Nicole Kidman in the film. The actress continues to work on diverse projects, showcasing her versatility and talent.
