Frank Spencer Sutton was an American actor best known for his role as Gunnery Sergeant Vince Carter in the television series "Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C". He was born in Clarksville, Tennessee, to Frank Sims and Thelma (Spencer) Sutton. Sutton discovered his interest in acting at a young age and started performing in school plays. After graduating from high school in Nashville in 1941, he returned to Clarksville and became a radio host.

During World War II, Sutton served in the U.S. Army in the South Pacific region, participating in 14 landings. Despite facing several rejections due to his color blindness, Sutton eventually joined the army and was honorably discharged as a sergeant after the war. He then pursued a career in acting and studied at Columbia University, graduating in 1952 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.

In the 1950s, Sutton appeared in various television shows such as "Decoy," "Route 66," "Naked City," "The Greatest Show on Earth," "The Fugitive," "Gunsmoke," and "The Twilight Zone." He played diverse roles, showcasing his talent and versatility as an actor. Sutton gained significant recognition in 1964 when he portrayed the cynical and irritable Gunnery Sergeant Carter in an episode of "The Andy Griffith Show." This successful episode led to the creation of the spin-off series "Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C," where Sutton reprised his role as Carter. The show aired for five seasons and became a hit.

After the series ended in 1969, Sutton made appearances on "The Jim Nabors Hour" alongside his co-star Jim Nabors. Despite their on-screen rivalry, Sutton and Nabors had a great respect for each other. Sutton also ventured into theater and performed in dinner theater productions. He married soap opera writer Toby Igler in 1949, and they had two children.

Tragically, Frank Sutton passed away on June 28, 1974, at the age of 50. He suffered a heart attack while preparing for a performance in Shreveport, Louisiana. Sutton's burial location is disputed, with some sources claiming he was buried in his hometown, while others suggest he was cremated.

Frank Sutton's early death remains a subject of speculation, as his lifestyle habits, such as heavy coffee consumption and smoking, may have contributed to his health issues.
