Lazarus and Joann Baptist Colorado: The Famous Siamese Twins

Lazarus and Joann Baptist Colorado were renowned freaks of the 17th century who gained fame and fortune due to their unique appearance. Born in Genoa, Italy, the Colorado brothers were one of the earliest documented examples of Siamese twins, living over 150 years before the well-known pair Chang and Eng.

Early Life

The Colorado twins, Lazarus and Joann Baptist, were born in Genoa in 1617. While Lazarus was relatively normal in appearance, Joann Baptist was a severely underdeveloped appendage. He grew from his chest with his head downwards and faced his older brother. His eyes remained closed, and his mouth was constantly open, although it was believed that he could speak. However, he exhibited expressive sighs, coughs, movements, and feeding abilities. It is likely that the brothers had separate digestive systems. Lazarus cared for Joann Baptist, constantly wiping away his drool.

Fame and Success

Lazarus, being more mobile, traveled extensively throughout Europe, performing as a freak show attraction. The Colorado brothers achieved great success wherever they went, even gaining the attention of monarchs. They were noticed by the courtiers of Louis XIV at fairs, who invited the twins to Paris and appointed them as musketeers. It is said that Colorado would terrify their enemies simply by opening his cloak.

A Life-Saving Act

Interestingly, Joann Baptist even managed to save his brother's life. One day, Lazarus killed someone who had been teasing him. However, the court ruled that they could not execute one brother without causing the death of the other, who was innocent.

Legacy

The Colorado brothers lived for approximately 50 years, during which Lazarus was able to marry and have children. Their unique bond and extraordinary appearance left a lasting impact on the world, making them one of the most famous Siamese twins of their time.
