Leavander Johnson, an esteemed American professional boxer, competed in the lightweight and light welterweight divisions. He achieved the pinnacle of his career by capturing the IBF lightweight world championship in 2005.

Early Career

Johnson embarked on his professional boxing journey in February 1989. He secured a significant victory in March 1994, knocking out unbeaten Sharmba Mitchell in the eighth round.

Tough Challenges

Johnson faced a series of setbacks in 1995 and 1997. He suffered an eighth-round knockout loss to WBC lightweight champion Miguel Angel Gonzalez in February 1995, and in May 1997, he was defeated by WBA lightweight champion Orzubek Nazarov via knockout in the seventh round.

Controversial Draw

In June 2002, Johnson encountered renowned journeyman Emanuel Burton (Augustus). Despite a spirited performance from Burton, the judges declared a split draw, eliciting an unusual reaction from the crowd, who cheered both fighters but booed the draw announcement.

Final Bout: IBF Championship

In June 2005, Johnson seized an opportunity to challenge for the vacant IBF lightweight title against Stefano Zoff. He emerged victorious, knocking out his opponent in the seventh round.

Tragic End

Johnson's reign as IBF champion was cut short in September 2005 when he faced Jesus Chavez. Chavez dominated the fight, and in the eleventh round, the referee intervened, ending the contest. Shortly after the bout, Johnson lost consciousness in the dressing room and was rushed to the hospital. Five days later, he succumbed to the injuries sustained during the fight.
