Lee Hsien Loong: Singapore's Third Prime Minister

Early Life and Education

Lee Hsien Loong, the eldest son of Singapore's first Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew, was born on February 10, 1952. He graduated with honors from Trinity College, Cambridge, where he studied mathematics and received a diploma in computer science. He also earned a Master's degree from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.

Military Career

After graduating from university, Lee served in the military, completing the US Army Command and General Staff College in Fort Leavenworth. He retired in 1984 as a Brigadier-General and Deputy Chief of the General Staff.

Political Career

Early Career (1984-2004)

In 1984, Lee entered politics and was elected to Parliament as a member of the People's Action Party (PAP), founded by his father in 1954. He held various ministerial positions, including Minister for Trade and Industry and Second Minister for Defence. From 1990 to 2004, he served as Deputy Prime Minister and oversaw the Ministry of Trade and Industry and the Ministry of Defence.

Prime Minister (2004-Present)

In 2004, Lee succeeded Goh Chok Tong as Prime Minister of Singapore. He also became Chairman of the Research, Innovation, and Enterprise Council. Lee is credited with successfully navigating the country through the Asian financial crisis and implementing a plan to liberalize the financial market. He is currently the Secretary-General of the PAP.

Personal Life

Lee Hsien Loong has been married twice. His first wife, Dr. Wong Ming Yang, died in 1982 after giving birth to his second child. In 1985, he married Ho Ching. They have two children.
