Early Life and Education
Lee Sun-kyun was born on March 2, 1975, in Seoul, South Korea. In his youth, he harbored no aspirations for acting, but he was drawn to the entertainment industry. He enjoyed listening to music and watching commercials, even contemplating a career in radio. However, it was basketball that captivated him in high school. Standing at 181 cm (5'11"), he dedicated countless hours to the sport, dreaming of becoming a professional athlete.
Fate had other plans, however. After graduating high school, Lee Sun-kyun enrolled in college, where he worked as a stagehand for the drama club. Initially, he had no intention of performing himself, but a chance occurrence changed everything. When a fellow club member dropped out, Lee stepped in as a replacement. The transformative power of acting captivated him, and he promptly abandoned college to pursue acting professionally. In 1994, he entered the Korea National University of Arts, graduating with a degree in theater in 2001.
Rise to Stardom
Despite earning a degree in theater, Lee's path to the screen was not immediate. He initially worked in theater and musicals, and appeared in commercials and television shows. However, after making his film debut in a friend's graduation project, he discovered his passion for filmmaking.
Lee's cinematic journey began with minor roles in KBS Drama City dramas. His screen time gradually increased, and he went on to star in numerous films and television series. In 2009, his talent gained international recognition at the Malaga Film Festival, where he won Best Actor for his performance in "Paju."
A major turning point came in 2010 when Lee portrayed a chef in the television series "Pasta." His character was a brilliant but troubled professional, showcasing a side of Lee that audiences had not seen before. Prior to this, he had been typecast in more gentle roles.
Lee became a fixture of the film and television industry, working on multiple projects annually. He ventured into both mainstream dramas and arthouse films. In 2014, he attended three prestigious European film festivals—Cannes, Venice, and Berlin—to represent three distinct films.
International Recognition
Lee's profile skyrocketed in 2019 with the release of "Parasite," which triumphed at the Cannes Film Festival and swept the Oscars. In the social class satire, Lee played the wealthy Mr. Park, whose lavish home is gradually infiltrated by a cunning poor family. His performance drew critical acclaim and resonated with audiences, as he brought nuance and individuality to every character he portrayed.
Despite his success, Lee considers himself fortunate, believing that he has been given more opportunities than he deserves.
Personal Life
Lee Sun-kyun is happily married to actress Jung Hye-jin. He fell in love with her after admiring her work from afar. After being introduced through a mutual friend, they began dating and married in 2009. The couple has two children, Lee Rook (born 2009) and Lee Roon (born 2011).
Jung has been a constant source of support for Lee's career. She encouraged him to challenge himself by taking on more demanding roles, which ultimately led to his rise to stardom. Despite the popularity of social media, Lee prefers to engage with the real world rather than the virtual realm of Instagram.
Current Projects
Lee Sun-kyun continues to expand his filmography with new projects, including "The Silent Sea," "Happiness," and "Kingmaker." A notable highlight of 2021 was the Apple TV+ series "Dr. Brain," in which he starred as the title character. As a scientist studying the human brain, his character possessed brilliant intellect but struggled with empathy and emotional expression. Through a family tragedy, he gained the ability to access the memories of the deceased.
