Early Life and CareerLella Cuberli, renowned American soprano, was born Lella Terell on September 29, 1945, in Austin, Texas. After training in Dallas and Milan, she made her professional debut in 1973 in Siena, Italy. For the next several years, she graced Italian stages primarily, starring in operas by Rossini, Donizetti, and Bellini.
Martina Franca and La Scala
From 1976 to 1982, Cuberli performed at the Teatro Comunale di Martina Franca, adding roles such as Amenaide in Tancredi, Adalgisa in Norma, and various characters in Giovanni Paisiello's operas to her repertoire. Notably, from 1978 to 1984, she performed at La Scala, embodying Aminta in Mozart's Il re pastore, Ginevra in Handel's Ariodante, the title role in Rodelinda, and Giunia in Mozart's Lucio Silla.
International Acclaim
Cuberli's talent soon spread beyond Italy, leading to performances at the Paris Opéra, Vienna State Opera, Aix-en-Provence Festival, and Salzburg Festival. Her repertoire expanded to include iconic Rossini roles such as Donna Anna, Fiordiligi, Elisabetta, and Desdemona, among many others.
American Triumphs
Upon returning to the United States, Cuberli debuted as Amenaide at the Lyric Opera of Chicago and as Semiramide at the Metropolitan Opera in 1990. That same year, she sang Mathilde in Rossini's Guillaume Tell at London's Covent Garden.

Lella Cuberli possessed a small but exceptionally beautiful voice that was steady, agile, and employed with exquisite taste. Her vocal range included a wide repertoire spanning from the Baroque to the Romantic eras. She gave a masterclass at the University of North Texas in spring 2008.

Cuberli's discography includes notable collaborations with Daniel Barenboim in Mozart operas such as Le nozze di Figaro, Don Giovanni, and Cosi fan tutte. She also recorded Giunia in Lucio Silla and the Great Mass in C minor under James Levine. Her interpretations of Beethoven's Missa Solemnis and 9th Symphony under Herbert von Karajan remain highly regarded. Additionally, she recorded Rossini's Il viaggio a Reims and Tancred, as well as Donizetti's Pia de' Tolomei. Her solo recitals showcased the works of Donizetti, Bellini, Rossini, Pergolesi, and Mozart.
