Early Life and Education

Balduina de Oliveira Sayão was born on May 11, 1902, in Botafogo, Rio de Janeiro. Despite losing her father at a young age, her mother raised Sayão and fostered her musical education. At the age of 18, Sayão made her operatic debut in Rio de Janeiro.

International Debut and European Success

After studying with renowned sopranos Elena Teodorini and Jean de Reszke, Sayão debuted at the Teatro alla Scala in 1930. She went on to sing in major opera houses in Rome, Buenos Aires, and Paris. In 1931, she made her sensationally successful debut at the Opéra Comique.

American Debut and Metropolitan Opera Stardom

Sayão's American debut took place at Town Hall in 1935. She soon sang at Carnegie Hall with the New York Philharmonic and Arturo Toscanini, who became a lifelong friend. In February 1937, she made her spectacular Metropolitan Opera debut as Manon. Sayão became a leading artist at the MET, known for her remarkable performances as Mozart heroines such as Zerlina and Susanna.

Marriage and Later Career

Sayão married Giuseppe Danise, an Italian baritone, in 1935. They purchased a home in Lincolnville, Maine. After retiring from the MET in 1952, Sayão occasionally performed and devoted herself to a quiet life with her husband.

Legacy and Honors

Bidu Sayão died on March 13, 1999. Her portrait by Curtis Ether hangs in the lobby of the Metropolitan Opera. In 2000, the Brazilian government established the Bidu Sayão International Vocal Competition to honor her memory. Sayão's vocal prowess and artistry continue to inspire generations of opera singers.
