Biography of Lenny Krayzelburg

Lenny Krayzelburg is an American swimmer who has achieved great success in his career. He is a four-time Olympic champion, a two-time world champion in long course swimming, and a world champion in short course swimming. Krayzelburg also held the world record in swimming.

Early Life and Training

Lenny Krayzelburg began swimming at the age of 5 and quickly showed talent in the sport. His first coach was Vitaly Avakumyan in Odessa, Ukraine. In 1989, at the age of 13, Krayzelburg and his parents Elena and Oleg, along with his younger sister Marshay, emigrated to the United States. They settled in the city of Irvine, California. It was there that Krayzelburg joined the Irvine Novaquatics swim club and began to further develop his skills.


Krayzelburg's achievements in the swimming world are impressive. He won gold medals in the 1998 World Swimming Championships in Perth, Australia, in the 100m and 200m backstroke events. In the 2000 Olympics in Athens, Greece, he won another gold medal as part of the 4x100m medley relay team in the 25m pool. He also earned silver medals in the 1998 World Championships in the 4x100m individual medley and the 2000 Olympics in the 25m pool in the 50m backstroke event.

Pacific Championships and Maccabiah Games

Krayzelburg was also successful in the Pacific Championships and the Maccabiah Games. He became a nine-time champion in the Pacific Championships, winning titles in backstroke events and relay events. Additionally, he represented the United States in the Maccabiah Games and achieved great success in swimming.

Appreciation for Odessa

Despite his success in the United States, Lenny Krayzelburg has always maintained a deep appreciation for his hometown of Odessa. He has expressed his love for the city and stated that it holds an important place in his heart. However, due to his busy competition schedule, he is unable to visit Odessa as often as he would like.
