Early Career

Born in Finland, Leo Kinnunen began his racing career in the 1960s, competing in various Formula and touring car races within his native country.

Grand Prix Debut

In 1974, Kinnunen made his Formula 1 debut with the AAW Racing Team, driving a Surtees. He failed to qualify in six of his seven starts, only reaching the grid at the Swedish Grand Prix where he retired after eight laps due to engine failure.

Sports Car Success

Kinnunen achieved greater success in sports car racing. In 1970, he won four races in the World Sportscar Championship with Porsche, sharing a car with Pedro Rodriguez. He also claimed three InterSerie victories from 1971 to 1973. In 1974, he won once in the InterSerie, driving a Porsche 917/30, and finished sixth in the championship standings.

Late Career and Retirement

Kinnunen continued to compete in the World Sportscar Championship from 1975 to 1977 without major success. He retired from racing shortly after.

Legacy

Kinnunen holds the distinction of being the last driver to race in a Formula 1 Grand Prix wearing an open-face helmet and goggles.
