Early Life and CareerLeo Neugebauer was born on June 19, 2000, in Görlitz, Saxony. He began his sporting journey at the age of six, initially pursuing both football and athletics. At age 15, he decided to dedicate himself solely to track and field. After graduating high school in 2019, Neugebauer enrolled at the University of Texas at Austin, specializing in mechanical engineering. He joined the Texas Longhorns track and field team.
International Debut and Breakthrough
In 2017, Neugebauer made his international debut at the World U18 Championships in Nairobi, where he claimed the bronze medal in the decathlon with a score of 7264 points. His breakout performance came at the 2022 World Athletics Championships in Eugene, where he finished 10th with 8162 points, showcasing significant progress in his abilities.
National Records and NCAA Success
In March 2023, Neugebauer qualified for the 2023 World Athletics Championships and the 2024 Summer Olympics. He set a personal best in the heptathlon, scoring 6148 points at the NCAA Indoor Championships in Birmingham, Alabama. At the NCAA Championships in Eugene in June 2023, he triumphed with a score of 8836 points, shattering the German national record in the decathlon. He surpassed Jürgen Hingsen's long-standing record by a mere four points. Neugebauer also broke the NCAA record previously held by renowned athletes such as Ashton Eaton and Ayden Owens-Delerme, setting personal bests in five decathlon events.
World Championships and Olympic Glory
At the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Neugebauer finished fifth in the decathlon, scoring 8645 points. In March 2024, he broke the German national record in the heptathlon once more, scoring 6374 points in Boston.
The pinnacle of Neugebauer's career came at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, where he secured the silver medal in the decathlon. With a score of 8748 points, he trailed only Norwegian athlete Marcus Rooth by a narrow 48 points.
