Leon Botha was a South African artist, hip-hop musician, and DJ who suffered from progeria, a rare genetic disorder characterized by premature aging of the body. He was one of the oldest progeria patients in the world, living until the age of 26.
Early Life and Education:
Leon Botha was born on June 4, 1985, in Cape Town, South Africa. He was diagnosed with progeria at the age of four. Despite not receiving formal education in art, except for studying painting and jewelry design for two years in school, Leon pursued a career as an artist after completing his education.
Artistic Career:
In January 2007, Leon organized his first solo art exhibition entitled "Liquid Sword; I am HipHop" at the Rust-en-Vrede gallery in Durbanville. The exhibition explored hip-hop culture as a way of life. The opening of the event featured a performance by Ashley Titus, known as Mr. Fat, a South African rapper and musician from the group "Brasse Vannie Kaap."
In March 2009, Leon opened his second solo exhibition, which revolved around his own life experiences. When asked if the exhibition's title, "Liquid Swords; Slices of Lemon," was related to the proverb "When life gives you lemons, make lemonade," Leon responded negatively.
In January 2010, Leon collaborated with Gordon Clark for his first photo exhibition, "Who Am I? ...Transgressions," at the João Ferreira Gallery in Cape Town.
Music Career and Collaboration:
Leon was also involved in DJing and turntablism under the pseudonym DJ Solarize. He was featured in the music video for the song "Enter the Ninja" by the popular South African group "Die Antwoord," alongside the band's frontman Watkin Tudor Jones (Ninja) and Yolandi Visser (YO-LANDI VI$$ER). The music video has garnered over 15 million views on YouTube.
Personal Life and Death:
Leon Botha's life story and his constant struggle for a normal, fulfilling, and active life gained significant attention on the internet. In November 2010, he suffered a stroke. He passed away from a pulmonary embolism, a complication related to progeria, in Cape Town on June 5, 2011, the day after his 26th birthday. Despite his deteriorating health in his final months, Leon continued working on a music video with "Die Antwoord" up until a week before his death.
