Biography of Leonard Woodcock
Leonard Woodcock was an influential figure in American labor unions and a skilled diplomat. He was born on February 15, 1911, in Providence, Rhode Island, to Ernest Woodcock and Mary Frill. From a young age, Woodcock was fascinated by automobiles and dreamed of a future involving them. However, his main area of focus later turned out to be quite different.
In 1933, Woodcock graduated from Detroit City College and began working as a car assembler. In 1941, he married Louise Martin and together they had a son named John and two daughters, Janet and Leslie. Woodcock remarried in 1978 to Sharon, a nurse, and they remained together until his death.
In 1970, Woodcock became the vice president of the United Automobile Workers (UAW) organization. For seven years, he dedicated much of his time and effort to the union, fully committing himself to public service. In 1977, Woodcock left UAW and was appointed as the head of the United States Liaison Office in Beijing. He played a crucial role in establishing diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of China.
From 1979 to 1981, Woodcock served as the first ambassador of the United States to China. Later, he pursued a career in teaching at the University of Michigan. During his time as a professor, Woodcock earned the respect and admiration of his colleagues, students, and external observers who closely followed his career.
Leonard Woodcock passed away on January 16, 2001, in Ann Arbor, where he lived with his wife Sharon. His children from his first marriage, Janet, Leslie, and John, achieved significant success in their respective fields. Janet became a professional photographer, Leslie became a history professor, and John pursued a career in the military. Leonard's grandchildren continue to follow in his footsteps, either working in their chosen professions or pursuing education in various academic institutions.
