Leonid Korneenko: Belarus' Silver Medalist at the 2007 World Championships

Early Career

Leonid Korneenko, born in 1987, is a Belarusian cross-country skier who began competing internationally in 2005. He made his World Cup debut in December 2006 in La Clusaz, France.

Breakthrough at 2007 World Championships

At the 2007 World Championships in Sapporo, Japan, Korneenko made history by capturing a silver medal in the 15-kilometer individual start freestyle event. Despite being ranked outside the top 700 in the FIS standings, he started the race early due to his low number and completed the distance before heavy snow fell. Korneenko's time of 36:25.8 remained the fastest until Lars Berger of Norway overtook him by 35.8 seconds, starting under a much later number.

Personal Best and Recognition

Korneenko's success in Sapporo was unexpected, as he had never competed in a World Cup personal event before. His performance earned him a financial stipend from the Belarusian government.

Post-Championship Career

After 2007, Korneenko never finished in the top 10 in World Cup personal races, specializing primarily in sprints. His last World Cup appearance was in 2010 in Canada, where he placed 60th in the 15-kilometer event.

Olympic Performance and Injury

At the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Korneenko did not finish in the top 50 in either the individual sprint or the 15-kilometer event. In the team sprint, he made an error that prevented his team from advancing to the semifinals.

Return to Competition

In 2010, Korneenko suffered a non-training-related injury. He took an extended break and returned to the sport in 2015, competing in Belarusian and FIS races. Currently, he resides in Minsk.

Legacy

Leonid Korneenko remains the first and only Belarusian to win a medal in cross-country skiing at the World Championships. His silver medal triumph in 2007 was a testament to his talent and the potential of белорусский ski racing.
