Leonid Konstantinovich Ramzin, an esteemed scientist and heat engineer, was born into the family of a rural teacher. He enrolled in the prestigious Imperial Technical School (now Bauman Moscow State Technical University), where he excelled in his studies. Ramzin's tenure as head of the Departments of "Fuel, Furnaces, and Boiler Installations" and "Thermal Power Stations" spanned a decade. From 1921 onward, Ramzin held a prominent position in Gosplan (State Planning Commission), where his expertise proved invaluable in formulating the GOELRO plan.

Ramzin's most significant contribution to the field was his groundbreaking invention of the direct-flow steam boiler. This innovation utilized cheaper fuel sources, offering significant advantages over existing boiler designs. In the early 1930s, he conceptualized the industrial-scale version of the boiler (the "Ramzin boiler"). His work earned him the prestigious Stalin Prize in 1943.

Incarceration and Continued Scientific Endeavors

In 1930, Ramzin was unjustly convicted in the "Industrial Party" case. Despite his imprisonment, he remained dedicated to his scientific pursuits. In 1931, he completed the prototype of the direct-flow boiler. Following successful trials, the OKB for Direct-Flow Boiler Construction was established under Ramzin's leadership. He was finally released from prison in 1936.

Post-War Laurels and Accolades

In recognition of his scientific brilliance, Ramzin was decorated with the Order of Lenin and the Order of the Red Banner of Labour. He established the Department of Boiler Construction at the Moscow Power Engineering Institute in 1943. Serving as its head until 1948, he laid the foundation for the specialization in boiler construction.
