Early Life and Education

Leopoldo Calvo-Sotelo was born into a prominent political family in Madrid, Spain, on April 12, 1926. His uncle was José Calvo Sotelo, the Minister of Finance under the dictatorship of Francisco Franco, while his cousin was the literary figure Joaquín Calvo Sotelo.

Leopoldo studied engineering at the Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería in Madrid, graduating in 1951. He then earned a doctorate in engineering from the Polytechnic University of Madrid in 1960.

Political Career

After completing his education, Calvo-Sotelo held various managerial positions within the Spanish railway company Renfe, starting in 1967. He was elected as a representative of the chemical industry to the Spanish Parliament in 1971 and served until 1975.

With the death of Franco in 1975, Spain embarked on a transition to democracy. Calvo-Sotelo played a significant role in this process, serving as Minister of Trade in the first post-Franco government led by Carlos Arias Navarro.

In 1976, he joined the government of Adolfo Suárez as Minister of Public Works and Urban Development. He later resigned from this position to focus on the organization of the newly formed Union of the Democratic Centre (UCD), with Suárez as its leader.

Prime Minister of Spain

Calvo-Sotelo's political career reached its peak when he was elected Prime Minister of Spain following Suárez's resignation in 1981. His election took place on February 23, 1981, amidst an attempted military coup.

During his tenure, Spain formally joined NATO, passed a law legalizing divorce, and approved a new territorial division of the country into autonomous regions. He also played a key role in negotiating the integration of Spain into the European Economic Community (EEC).

Post-Premiership

After the UCD's defeat in the 1982 parliamentary elections, Calvo-Sotelo stepped down as Prime Minister. He continued his political career, serving as a member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe from 1983 to 1986 and as a Member of the European Parliament from 1986 to 1987.

Leopoldo Calvo-Sotelo passed away on May 3, 2008, at the age of 82. He left behind a legacy as a prominent figure in Spain's democratic transition and as a respected statesman who played a key role in shaping the country's post-Franco era.
