The Birth of the Leprikons
In 1997, Ilya Mitko, a former vocalist of the punk band "Kindergarten," decided to form a new group with a unique sound. He named it "Leprikon" (later "Leprikons") after the Greek god of revelry, Leprikons.
The Early Years
The band's debut demo cassette, "Detki," sold only a meager 10 copies out of an initial 20. However, they continued to experiment, adding an accordion (played by former bassist Vladimir Fedoryuk) to their lineup.
Lineup Changes and Struggles
The early years of the Leprikons were marked by frequent turnover of members, with guitarists, bassists, and vocalists coming and going. The band struggled to find stability, with alcohol abuse becoming a prevalent issue.
The Breakthrough
Finally, a stable lineup emerged, and they began work on their debut album, "Nam s Toboyu Bylo Super." The album featured the hit single "Khali-Gali," which became a radio staple. The Leprikons also signed a contract with the prestigious "Soyuz" record label.
Commercial Success
With the release of "Nam s Toboyu Bylo Super," the Leprikons embarked on a whirlwind of concerts, tours, and festival appearances. Their performance at the legendary "Nashestvie-2000" festival, where they opened the second day, was a major breakthrough.
Subsequent Releases
In 2001, the band released their second album, which further solidified their status as one of the most popular bands in the Russian ska scene. They continued to tour and perform extensively, amassing a loyal following that has lasted to this day.
