Biography of Leslie Feist

Canadian pop rock singer and songwriter Leslie Feist was born on February 13, 1976 in Amherst, Nova Scotia. At the age of 15, Feist formed a punk band called 'Placebo', not to be confused with the more successful British band of the same name. Despite this, Feist and her band achieved some success, including sharing the stage with the legendary 'Ramones' during the Infest festival.

Feist's parents were well-known Canadian-American expressionist artist Harold Feist and artist Lyn Feist. However, their creative union didn't last long and they separated when Feist was young. She grew up with her mother, first in Regina, Saskatchewan and later in Calgary, Alberta. As a child, Feist dreamed of becoming a writer and was passionately involved in singing in a church choir. At the age of 12, she was one of thousands who participated in a dance number during the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics in Calgary.

In her teenage years, Feist formed the band 'Placebo' and later met musician Brendan Canning. Ten years later, they would perform together in the band 'Broken Social Scene'. Feist experienced a serious vocal cord injury while performing with her band, which prevented her from singing for a considerable amount of time. However, she eventually recovered her voice.

She also collaborated with electro-punk singer Merrill Nisker, known as Peaches. In 1999, Feist released her debut album titled 'Monarch (Lay Your Jewelled Head Down)', and around the same time, she joined 'Broken Social Scene'. Their collaborative album 'You Forgot It in People' won a Juno Award for Alternative Music.

By this time, her albums had achieved gold and platinum statuses in Canada, and she became a Juno Award recipient.
