Levi Woodbury
Levi Woodbury was an American lawyer and statesman who served in numerous high-ranking positions throughout his career.
Early Life and Legal Career
Woodbury was born in Francestown, New Hampshire, in 1789. In 1809, he graduated from Dartmouth College's law school and established his legal practice in 1812. He served as a judge of the New Hampshire Supreme Court from 1816 to 1823, followed by a term as Governor of the state from 1823 to 1824.
Political Career
In 1825, Woodbury was elected to the New Hampshire State Legislature, where he held the position of speaker. From 1825 to 1831, he served as a member of the United States Senate.
Service in the Jackson Administration
In 1831, President Andrew Jackson appointed Woodbury to the position of Secretary of the Navy. Three years later, in 1834, he was promoted to Secretary of the Treasury, a role he held until 1841.
Return to the Senate and the Supreme Court
After leaving the Treasury Department, Woodbury was once again elected to the Senate, serving from 1841 to 1845. In 1846, President James K. Polk appointed him to the Supreme Court of the United States, where he served as an Associate Justice until his death in 1851.
