Victor Bonaparte: Pretender to the French Throne and Head of the Bonapartist Party
Victor Napoleon Bonaparte, born in 1862, was a French prince from the Bonaparte family. As the head of the Bonapartist party from 1891 and a pretender to the French throne from 1879 until his death in 1926, he played a significant role in French politics.
Early Life and Succession
At the age of eighteen, Prince Victor became the head of the House of Bonaparte on the orders of Napoleon Eugene. He thus became Napoleon V in 1879, although many Bonapartists favored his younger brother, Prince Louis. However, a rift between father and son led to a split in the Bonapartist party in 1884.
Exile and Leadership
In 1886, the princes of the former ruling dynasty were exiled from the French Republic, forcing Prince Victor to flee to Belgium. His father's death in 1891 placed him at the helm of the entire Bonapartist party, which had by then lost most of its influence.
Marriage and Descendants
Prince Victor married Clementine of Belgium and they had two children: Marie Clotilde Bonaparte, Princess Napoleon (1912-1996), and Louis Bonaparte, Prince Napoleon (1914-1997).
Death and Legacy
Prince Victor Bonaparte died in Brussels in 1926. Despite his unsuccessful bid for the throne, he remained a prominent figure in French political circles until his death, representing the legacy of the Napoleonic era.
