Lily Palmer was a talented German actress who gained immense popularity in the past and was the recipient of various awards, including the Golden Globe. She was born on May 24, 1914, in Germany, to a German surgeon of Jewish descent, Alfred Peiser, and an Austrian actress of Jewish nationality, Rose Lissmann. When Lily was four years old, her family moved to Berlin-Charlottenburg, where she grew up and received her education.
Early Career
In Berlin, Lily Palmer studied the art of drama. In 1933, her family relocated to Paris due to the increasing threat of the Nazi regime. During this period, Lily performed in cabarets and caught the attention of British experts. She was soon offered a contract with the British division of the French film studio Gaumont-British, and Palmer agreed to collaborate with the company. In 1935, she made her film debut in "Crime Unlimited" and actively appeared in British cinema for the next ten years.
Move to Hollywood
In 1943, Lily Palmer married actor Rex Harrison, and in 1945, she followed her husband to Hollywood. There, she signed a contract with Warner Brothers studio and soon appeared in films such as "Cloak and Dagger" and "Body and Soul." In 1951, Palmer also worked extensively on television, appearing in various popular projects. During this time, she and her husband Harrison performed together on Broadway in the highly acclaimed play "Bell, Book and Candle." The following year, Lily starred in "The Four Poster," once again demonstrating her excellent acting abilities.
Personal Life and Later Career
In 1956, Lily Palmer and Rex Harrison divorced. The marriage proved to be unstable, with Harrison's frequent extramarital affairs. Not even their beloved son Alfred, born in 1944, could save the relationship. Harrison's extramarital relationships were not always "successful"; for example, his tragic affair with Carole Landis led her to take her own life in 1948.
In 1954, Palmer returned to Germany, where she frequently appeared in films and worked in television. She also continued to work in the United States and other countries. In 1958, Lily married actor Carlos Thompson, and they remained together until her death in 1986.
Sadly, Lily Palmer passed away at the age of 71 in Los Angeles due to cancer. She left behind a legacy of exceptional talent and remarkable contributions to the world of acting.
