Barry Humphries

Early Life and Dame Edna Everage

Barry Humphries is an Australian actor, comedian, and writer best known for his iconic characters, Dame Edna Everage and Sir Les Patterson. He first introduced Dame Edna Everage, a caricature of a suburban Melbourne housewife, at the University of Melbourne Theatre in 1955. Over four decades, Edna evolved into one of Australia's most acclaimed comedic figures: a razor-tongued, flamboyant, purple-haired lady with cat-eye glasses. Humphries has portrayed Edna in numerous films, television shows, and stage productions and has also authored several books, including an autobiography. Notably, Humphries refers to Edna as a real person, not an alter ego. In 2007, a street in Melbourne was named in honor of Dame Edna.

Career and Accolades

Humphries has achieved success as an actor, producer, and playwright in London's West End musical theater. In 1982, he was awarded the Order of Australia for his contributions to the performing arts. In 2007, he was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire.

Personal Life

Humphries has been married four times, with the first three ending in divorce. He has been with his current wife, Lizzie Spender, since 1990.

Recent Film Role

In 2012, Humphries appeared as the Goblin King in Peter Jackson's "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey," an adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's classic novel.
