Life and Legacy of Lillian Disney

Lillian Disney, wife and long-time companion of legendary animator Walt Disney, lived an extraordinary life filled with love, art, and philanthropy.

Early Life in Idaho

Born Lillian Marie Bounds in Spalding, Idaho, Lillian grew up in the Lapwai Indian Reservation, where her father worked as a blacksmith and federal marshal. Her striking features and dark, bobbed hair drew attention from suitors.

Romance and Marriage with Walt Disney

Lillian found employment at Disney Studio, where she met Walt. Their courtship blossomed subtly, with Walt always dropping Lillian off at her home last after parties, despite her close proximity. In 1925, they married at the Episcopal Church Nativity in Lewiston, Idaho.

Family and Legacy

Lillian and Walt welcomed two daughters: Diane Marie Disney and adopted daughter Sharon Mae Disney. Diana later gave Lillian seven grandchildren, while Sharon added three more. Lillian contributed to the creation of "Plane Crazy," but her most famous contribution was reportedly suggesting the name "Mickey Mouse" for her husband's iconic creation.

Post-Walt Disney Years

After Walt's passing in 1966, Lillian remarried John L. Truyens in 1969, a union that lasted 12 years until his death. In 1987, she donated $50 million to fund a new concert hall, which opened in 2003 after delays and six years after Lillian's passing.

Final Years and Death

On December 15, 1997, Lillian suffered a stroke, exactly 31 years after Walt's death. She passed away the following morning at the age of 98. Her life and legacy remain a testament to the enduring power of love, creativity, and the impact of one extraordinary woman.
