Lillian Hartley and Allan Marks: The Oldest Couple in the World

Lillian Hartley and Allan Marks, a couple from California, have broken the age record by becoming the oldest couple in the world to get married. By the time of their wedding in 2012, Lillian was 95 years old, and her groom Allan had already turned 98. Their combined age amounted to 193 years, making them the "youngest" elderly couple.

A Chance Encounter

Lillian Hartley and Allan Marks first met in Palm Springs, California in 1994. Allan, a retired veterinarian from Brooklyn, complimented Lillian on her dress, sparking a romance that would last for 18 years. Despite not considering herself deeply religious, Lillian felt the need to formalize their relationship, as living together in a civil union felt somehow unsatisfying to her. Both Lillian and Allan were widowed and had grown deeply attached to each other over the years, unable to imagine a life apart.

A Life Filled with Adventure

Together, the elderly couple embarked on numerous travels, even visiting Cancun, Mexico. Due to their constant adventures, they never found the time to get married earlier. However, as it turned out, their timing was perfect, as marrying earlier would have prevented them from setting the world record. Prior to their marriage, the oldest couple in the world was Rose Pollard, aged 90, and Forrest Lunsway, aged 100. Simple calculations show that despite Forrest's century-old age, Lillian and Allan surpass them by a couple of years.

A Timeless Love

Lillian and Allan affectionately refer to themselves as the "Romeo and Juliet of the pension age." Lillian admitted to journalists that she fears "being left a bride" as no one knows what the future holds. She expressed her desire to spend eternity with Allan, solidifying their union. On February 29, 2012, they tied the knot in a quiet civil ceremony in Indio, California. Yvonne Cruz, the officiant, was deeply moved by their love, stating that as soon as they walked through the door, she could feel their deep affection for each other. Lillian declared, "I want to marry this man," and Allan embraced her, saying, "I want to be with this woman until the end of my days. I want us to always be together." Cruz, who had officiated thousands of weddings, described their ceremony as the most unforgettable and touching.

The Oldest Couple in the World

At the age of 98 and 95, Allan and Lillian became the oldest engaged couple in the world. Their love story serves as a reminder that age is just a number and that true love can be found at any stage of life.
