Biography of Linda Dangcil
Linda Dangcil was an American actress and dancer, best known for her roles as Sister Ana in the ABC television series 'The Flying Nun', based on the book 'The Fifteenth Pelican' by Marie Teresa Rios, and as the voice of Carmen 'Raya' Alonso in the animated series 'Jem and the Holograms'. She was born on June 19, 1942.
Early Career
As a teenager, Dangcil appeared in the Broadway production of 'Peter Pan' in the 1950s alongside Mary Martin. She also had roles in several television shows. Her work in 'Peter Pan' led to her being selected by Jerome Robbins, one of its directors, as one of the leading dancers for the film adaptation of 'West Side Story' in 1961.
The Flying Nun
From 1967 to 1970, Dangcil played the role of Sister Ana in the ABC sitcom 'The Flying Nun'. The series was filmed at San Tanco, a monastery located near San Juan, the capital of Puerto Rico. Linda's character appeared in 37 episodes of the show.
Other Projects
Dangcil's television credits include roles in shows such as 'The Judge', 'The Bold Ones: The New Doctors' (as Celia Hernandez), 'Maverick' (as Angelita), 'The Rifleman', 'Stagecoach West', and 'Rawhide'. She also appeared in the film 'Here Come the Brides' alongside Bruce Lee.
Villa Alegre and Voice Acting
In the 1970s, Linda portrayed the character Elena in the children's series 'Villa Alegre', which was created for both English and Spanish-speaking audiences. She also participated in the production of several animated films. Her most notable voice role was Carmen 'Raya' Alonso in the animated series 'Jem and the Holograms'.
Later Career and Personal Life
Dangcil took part in the first theatrical tour of 'Broadway Showstoppers' at the Shubert Theatre in Los Angeles. Before her passing, she played the role of Sally in the Asian American theater organization 'East West Players' production of 'Follies'. Linda also directed several plays for Los Angeles festivals and represented the professional union of the Screen Actors Guild.
Passing
Linda Dangcil passed away on May 7, 2009, at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles after an eight-year battle with throat cancer. She was preceded in death by her husband, jazz musician Dick Hamilton. The couple had two children, Linda Michelle and Sky Hamilton.
