Biography of Lindsay Davenport
IntroductionLindsay Davenport is a famous American tennis player, who was formerly ranked as the world's number one in both singles and doubles. She has won three Grand Slam singles titles, three Grand Slam doubles titles, and was also the Olympic champion in 1996. Davenport has earned over $22 million in prize money throughout her career. She has held the top position in the rankings on several occasions, ending the year as the number one player in 1998, 2001, 2004, and 2005.
Early Life and Career
Lindsay Davenport was born to Wink Davenport, a member of the U.S. volleyball team at the 1968 Olympic Games, and Anne Davenport. She attended Chadwick School in Palo Verde and Murrieta Valley High School in Murrieta. Davenport turned professional on February 22, 1993, but had already participated in professional-level tournaments before that. In 1991, she played in the qualifying rounds of the San Diego tournament, the Schenectady tournament, and the main draw of the US Open. She reached the second round of the Miami tournament and played in the qualifying rounds of the US Open, as well as nine other tour events that year. In 1993, Davenport reached the quarterfinals at Indian Wells, turned professional, and won her first title at the age of 16 years and 11 months in Lucerne. She also advanced to the third round of the Australian Open and the fourth round of the US Open, finishing the year in the top 20.
Comeback and Later Career
On July 18, 2007, Davenport announced her return to the WTA Tour. In her first tournament back, she partnered with Lisa Raymond in New Haven, but they were eliminated in the first round. Davenport returned to singles competition at the Bali tournament, where she won her first title since 2005, defeating Daniela Hantuchova in the final. She also defeated the world number three, Elena Dementieva, on her way to the final. Her second tournament back was in Beijing, where she defeated Elena Dementieva in the quarterfinals before losing to Elena Jankovic in the semifinals. Davenport then played in Quebec, where she defeated Vera Zvonareva in the semifinals and Julia Vakulenko in the final to win her 53rd career singles title. In January 2008, she surpassed Martina Hingis after winning her 54th title in Auckland, New Zealand. Davenport hoped to participate in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.
Personal Life
In 2003, Lindsay Davenport married former tennis player, and current banker, Jon Leach, who is the brother of professional tennis player Rick Leach. On June 10, 2007, Davenport gave birth to their son, Jagger Jonathan.
