Early Life and Musical Beginnings
Born to a truck driver and a stenographer, Line Renaud's passion for music was sparked by her father, a trumpeter in the local brass band. At the tender age of seven, she captivated an amateur talent competition with her expressive voice.
WWII and Hidden Talent
During World War II, Renaud's father fought on the front, leaving the family isolated in their hometown. Her education was entrusted to her grandmother and great-grandmother. A tragic turn of events, witnessing the execution of neighbors by Nazi soldiers, led Renaud to secretly apply to the Lille Conservatory.
Unbeknownst to her, the conservatory focused on classical voice training. However, fate intervened when she sang a popular blues song by Louis Gasté. Impressed by her performance, Renaud was offered a position as a singer on Lille radio, adopting the stage name Jacqueline Rey.
International Fame and Success
After relocating to Paris, Renaud's career soared. She toured England, performed at the legendary Moulin Rouge, and captivated American audiences. This led to invitations to perform in New York, Los Angeles, and Canada, alongside the likes of Johnny Carson, Dinah Shore, Dean Martin, and Ed Sullivan.
Renaud returned to France as a star, performing in the "Casino de Paris" revue in Las Vegas. From 1976 to 1979, she successfully staged her fifth and final show at over 50 years of age.
Personal Loss and Triumph
In 1994, the death of her husband, composer Loulou Gasté, devastated Renaud. With resilience, she immersed herself in her work, achieving further theatrical successes. She also appeared extensively in film and television. In June 1999, her mother, a close confidante, passed away at the age of 94.
Legacy and Recognition
Line Renaud remains one of France's most beloved actresses and singers. Her enduring talent has brought her numerous accolades and a place in the hearts of audiences worldwide.
