Currently, she serves as an editor at the Vancouver Courier, while also working on a series of historical essays.

Literary Career
Smedman is highly regarded as one of Canada's leading fantasy and science fiction writers, particularly in the realm of game-world fiction. Her introduction to the Dungeons & Dragons universe in 1981 sparked a lifelong passion for role-playing games.
In the late 1980s, she began writing for Dragon magazine and later collaborated directly with TSR, the creators of Dungeons & Dragons. Her debut novel, "The Lucifer Deck," was published in 1997 and was set in the Shadowrun universe. Eight subsequent novels followed, including the acclaimed "Extinction," which was part of the "War of the Spider Queen" series.
In 2004, Smedman released "The Apparition Trail," marking a departure from established role-playing systems and showcasing her own original world-building.
