A Life-Changing Necessity: The Portable Home

Faced with displacement and homelessness five years ago, Liu Lingchao, a Chinese man, ingeniously devised a portable home to carry on his back.

From Despair to Innovation

After losing his job and being evicted from his home, 38-year-old Lingchao embarked on a transformative journey. Dismayed by the constant exposure to rain, he utilized bamboo, plastic sheets, and polyethylene to construct a unique dwelling.

The Birth of a Portable Paradise

Lingchao's portable home, crafted from bamboo frames covered in plastic and polyethylene, provides him with a sense of home wherever he goes. "I was tired of constantly getting soaked in the rain," he explains. "Even when I found shelter under bridges or abandoned buildings, it was often occupied, forcing me to endure cramped conditions." Frustrated, he constructed a makeshift bamboo home at a temporary construction site.

A Journey of Resilience

When it was time to move on, Lingchao felt it was undignified to drag his home behind him. Instead, he modified his 60-kilogram structure to be carried on his back. "From that day forward, I've never looked back," he says.

The Wandering Snail

Today, Liu, known in China as the "Great Snail Man," travels approximately 30 kilometers daily, earning a living by selling empty plastic bottles. Lingchao is currently using his third iteration of the portable home, as the previous two had deteriorated. His unwavering spirit and ingenuity continue to inspire those who cross his path.
