Liviu Librescu: A Heroic Life
Early Life and EducationLiviu Librescu was born on August 18, 1930, in Ploiești, Romania, to a Jewish family. During World War II, he was imprisoned in labor camps with his family until the war's end. After the war, he pursued his education in Bucharest, graduating with honors.

Scientific Career
Librescu began his illustrious scientific career in Romania. In the 1970s, his support for Israel and refusal to join the Communist Party hindered his career. Undeterred, he obtained Israel's support for his emigration and spent the next decade teaching at the Technion in Haifa and Tel Aviv University.

Arrival in the United States
In 1985, Librescu moved to the United States to join Virginia Tech as a professor of aerospace and ocean engineering. He quickly established himself as a renowned scholar, publishing numerous peer-reviewed articles and setting university records for research productivity.
April 16, 2007: A Day of Tragedy
On April 16, 2007, a gunman opened fire on the Virginia Tech campus, killing 33 people. Librescu's classroom was among the targeted locations. Hearing gunshots and screams, he immediately began evacuating his students.
A Heroic Sacrifice
As the gunman approached Librescu's classroom, he barred the door with his body, shielding his students from the assailant. Despite being shot five times, Librescu held the door shut, giving his students time to escape. Thanks to his bravery, 20 of his students survived.
Posthumous Honors
For his exceptional heroism, Librescu was posthumously awarded the Order of the Star of Romania, his country's highest honor. His sacrifice also earned him widespread recognition and praise from around the world.
