She proposed a theory of nuclear structure in 1921, suggesting the presence of alpha particles, protons, and electrons within the nucleus. In 1925, she demonstrated the causal relationship between the emission of gamma rays and alpha or beta particles from the nucleus. Her groundbreaking studies on neutron bombardment of heavy elements, particularly uranium, laid the groundwork for understanding nuclear fission.

Meitner's contributions to science have been widely recognized. Element 109 was named meitnerium in her honor. Her work has had a profound impact on the fields of physics and chemistry.
