The World's Thinnest Woman

Lizzie Velasquez is a young American woman from Austin, Texas, who suffers from a very rare condition - an unknown syndrome that affects her body in a unique way. Lizzie weighs just over 25 kilograms (60 pounds) and stands at 152 centimeters tall, with 0% body fat. She constantly has to sustain her fragile life by eating. Her metabolism forces her to eat up to 60 times a day, as not receiving food every 15 minutes can be fatal. There are only three known cases like hers in the world, including Amanda, a woman from England in her thirties, and Abigail, a 15-year-old girl who also lives in Austin. Lizzie is the average age among these girls who have become victims of this terrible and unexplored disease.

A Miraculous Survival

Lizzie was born prematurely, weighing only 1 kilogram. Despite doctors' predictions that she would not survive, Lizzie defied the odds. Her weakened immune system further affects her already compromised body. She suffers from vision problems and is partially blind in one eye, with her vision in the other eye continuing to deteriorate. Any seemingly harmless illness can be extremely dangerous for her. Although doctors have not been able to definitively diagnose her condition, one thing is clear - it is not anorexia. Lizzie's extreme thinness is frightening, especially considering that most people would suffer from severe obesity if they consumed as much food as she does. Pizza, chips, chocolate, ice cream, and bread - Lizzie does not gain weight, but her main goal is to maintain her current weight.

A Life of Uncertainty

Lizzie has visited countless doctors throughout her life, but there are still no answers or adequate treatments. All she can do is eat, eat, and eat to stay alive. Her syndrome shares similarities with several other conditions, including progeria, or premature aging, although Lizzie does not fully fit the criteria for progeria. Lizzie's parents are her biggest support system and bear the responsibility of caring for their fragile daughter. Lizzie considers her parents to be her heroes, acknowledging that her world revolves around them. She has a younger sister named Marina, who genuinely believes she is the older sister despite a five-year age difference. Lizzie's family also includes her younger brother, Chris, whom she considers the best protector for both her and her sister. Interestingly, neither her sister nor her brother suffers from any genetic illnesses and are completely healthy.

A Message of Hope

Lizzie is not fond of being stared at by people on the streets. She has grown tired of curious glances since childhood, but she has learned to accept it. Currently, Lizzie is studying at university and hopes to become a motivational speaker after graduation. She has a lot to say to people. At the age of 21, Lizzie Velasquez knows what it means to fight for her life not only every day but every 15 minutes. She knows how to find positivity in almost hopeless situations, and she knows how to strengthen her spirit and never lose hope. Lizzie co-authored a book about herself, and her entire life is a hope that one day, doctors will find a cure for her illness, and her life will become complete. For now, Lizzie remains a beacon of hope for the medical community as they continue to study her mysterious syndrome and work towards finding a treatment for her condition while she is still alive.
