Lolita Milyavskaya: A Provocative Russian Showbiz Icon
Childhood and Early LifeLolita Markovna Milyavskaya (née Gorelik) was born on October 14, 1963, in Mukachevo, Transcarpathia. Her parents, who were both musicians, moved the family to Beregovo a year later, and then sent young Lolita to live with her grandparents in Lviv.
Musical Beginnings
Milyavskaya's artistic journey began at age 10 when her mother started taking her to concerts. By the age of 11, she was performing backing vocals for Irina Ponarovskaya. After graduating from the Tambov Institute of Culture in 1985, she joined the Odessa Philharmonic Orchestra, where she met Alexander Tsekalo.
"Akademia" and Television Stardom
Milyavskaya and Tsekalo formed the cabaret-duo "Akademia" in 1985. Their humorous performances drew comparisons to "Sonny and Cher." As a duo, they also hosted popular television programs such as "TV-Pizza" and "Good Morning, Country!"
Solo Career Breakthrough
Following her divorce from Tsekalo, Milyavskaya launched a successful solo career. Her debut album, "Flowers" (2000), sold 50,000 copies, while her second album, "Divorced Woman's Show" (2003), increased sales six-fold. The album "Format" (2005) surpassed 700,000 copies sold.
Controversies and Acclaim
Milyavskaya's album "Fetish" (2008) raised eyebrows for its sexually explicit content, leading to its censorship. Nonetheless, she continued to push boundaries, participating in the "Chicago" musical as Matron "Mama" Morton and posing for "Playboy" magazine. In addition to her music career, she became a vocal advocate for the LGBTQ+ community in Russia.
Personal Life
Milyavskaya has been married five times. Her first marriage to Alexander Belyaev was annulled almost immediately. Her second husband, Alexander Milyavsky, gave her her stage name. Her third marriage to Alexander Tsekalo produced her only child, a daughter named Eva. She also had brief marriages to Alexander Zarubin and Dmitry Ivanov. In 2019, she divorced Ivanov and publicly announced her decision to take a break from romantic relationships.
Recent Career
Milyavskaya continues to appear frequently on Russian television, including guest appearances on shows like "Fate of a Man" and "Invisible Man." She has also given candid interviews to YouTube vloggers like Regina Todorenko and Nastya Ivleeva.
