Biography of Laura Berger
Laura Berger was a Swiss German-speaking writer. She was born into a family of teachers. In 1939, she began studying German literature and language at the University of Basel. In 1941, she volunteered for military service and served as a clerk in court until 1943.
Early Writing Career
In 1943, Laura Berger's novel "Der barmherzige Hügel" was published, which she had written as part of a literary competition. The novel depicted the hopelessness of the wartime generation. Interestingly, the main character in her novel chose the same method of suicide that Laura Berger herself would tragically choose later on.
Posthumous Recognition
Laura Berger's novels garnered interest due to the parallels between her own life and the stories she wrote. In 1944, her novel "Eine Geschichte gegen Thomas" was published posthumously. In 1981, "Der barmherzige Hügel" was republished and translated into French and Italian. The same year, a film titled "Die Zeit ist böse" was directed by Beat Kuert, a German filmmaker.
Despite her short life, Laura Berger made a lasting impact with her literary works, which continue to be appreciated by readers and scholars alike.
