Lorenz Lange: Swedish Explorer, Diplomat, and Author

Early Life and Career

Lorenz Lange was a Swedish explorer and diplomat who served in the court of Peter the Great. In 1712, he joined the Russian army as a lieutenant in the engineering corps.

The China Missions

In 1715, Lange embarked on his first mission to China as part of a delegation led by Peter the Great. The aim was to establish trade routes in the East. During this journey, he traversed Siberia and the Gobi Desert, providing Europe with valuable accounts of these regions.

Diplomatic Missions and Observations

Lange returned to China in 1719 as an observer of Russian trade caravans. From 1720 to 1722, he resided in Beijing as a trade agent. During this time, he became the first Swede to interact with Korean diplomats and authored a detailed report on Korea.

Border Disputes and the Vladislavich-Raguzinsky Delegation

In 1724, Lange served on a commission to resolve border disputes. In 1725, he returned to China as part of a delegation headed by S. L. Vladislavich-Raguzinsky. Throughout his diplomatic career, Lange traveled to China six times in total.

Writings and Publications

Lange's detailed journal of his 1715 journey was published in Germany and England, providing Europeans with an accurate description of the Chinese Empire. In 1726, he published another work, recounting his experiences in China from 1721 to 1722.

Later Career

In 1739, Lange was appointed Vice-Governor of Irkutsk. He continued his financial activities and oversaw the caravan trade in the region. Lange met and assisted renowned explorers such as Vitus Bering, Johann Gmelin, and George Steller.

Contributions and Legacy

Lorenz Lange's exploration and diplomatic missions contributed significantly to European understanding of the East. His writings and observations provided valuable insights into the Chinese Empire, Korea, and the vast expanse of Siberia.
