Thomas Mayr-Harting, Austrian Diplomat and UN Representative

Early Life and Education

Born in Austria, Thomas Mayr-Harting earned his doctorate of law from the University of Vienna in 1977. His academic pursuits continued at the College of Europe in Bruges, Belgium, and the Hague Academy of International Law, where he graduated in 1978.

Diplomatic Career

Mayr-Harting embarked on his diplomatic career in 1979. He held key positions in the Austrian missions to the European Communities in Brussels (1982-1986) and the Austrian Embassy in Moscow (1986-1990).

High-Ranking Positions in Austria

Returning to Austria, Mayr-Harting served as an aide to Foreign Minister Alois Mock (1991-1995). He subsequently held the roles of Deputy Political Director and Head of Political Security Policy (1995-1999).

International Representation

From 1999 to 2003, Mayr-Harting served as Austrian Ambassador to Belgium and Head of the Austrian Mission to NATO. He played a pivotal role as Austria's Ambassador for Special Missions to the Western Balkans (2002-2004).

Political Director and UN Representative

In 2003, Mayr-Harting was appointed Ambassador and Political Director in the Austrian Foreign Ministry. In 2008, he assumed the role of Austria's Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York, a position he has held since. As such, he has also represented Austria on the UN Security Council since January 1, 2009.

Additional Responsibilities

Mayr-Harting serves as Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Austrian Development Agency (ADA). He has made significant contributions to Austria's foreign policy and international relations throughout his distinguished diplomatic career.
