Biography of Lorna Luft
Lorna Luft (born November 21, 1952) is an American theater, film, and television actress and singer. She is the daughter of the legendary actress and singer Judy Garland and the half-sister of singer and actress Liza Minnelli.
Early Life and Career
Luft was born in Santa Monica, California, to Garland and her third husband, Sid Luft. At the age of eleven, she made her television debut in a Christmas episode of her mother's show, "The Judy Garland Show," alongside her sisters Joey and Liza. In the episode, she performed the popular Christmas song "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town."
In 1967, Luft joined her family in a summer concert tour dedicated to Garland's final performance at the legendary Palace Theatre on Broadway. In this month-long show, Judy performed with her two daughters, fourteen-year-old Lorna and twelve-year-old Joey. The show was recorded live and released by ABC Records.
Personal Life and Career
Luft currently lives with her second husband, Colin Freeman. She has children from her first marriage to musician and manager Jake Hooker, Vanessa and Jesse Richards.
From 1985 to 1986, Luft played Libby Kegler in the final season of the CBS television series "Trapper John, M.D." In 2007, she appeared in two episodes of the Logo channel's series "Rick & Steve: The Happiest Gay Couple In All The World."
On Broadway, Luft made her debut in 1971 at the Shubert Theatre as a replacement in the show "Promises, Promises," an adaptation of the classic 1960 film "The Apartment." She is also known for her role in the national tour of the musical "They're Playing Our Song" in 1981.
In 1983, Luft played Patty in the Off-Broadway production "Snoopy!!! The Musical," a sequel to "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown." Later that same year, she had a leading role in "Extremities" with Farrah Fawcett.
From 1992 to 1994, Luft played Adelaide in the American and subsequent international concert production of "Guys and Dolls." In 1996, she was invited to the Irish production of the musical "Follies" with Enda Markey, Dave Willetts, and Millicent Martin.
In 2002, Luft played Mama Rose in the production of "Gypsy" by the students of the University of Richmond. From November 2006 to January 2007, she performed in the British premiere of Irving Berlin's "White Christmas: The Musical," a new theatrical adaptation of the classic film.
In October 2007, Luft released her debut album, "Lorna Luft: Songs My Mother Taught Me," in the United Kingdom. The album, produced by Barry Manilow and her husband Colin Freeman, was dedicated to the music of her mother, Judy Garland. Prior to the album release, she toured Ireland in 2005 with a live stage show of the same name.
Current Activities
As of now, Luft continues her theatrical career. In July 2009, she performed at the Mermaid Theatre in London, recording for the television series "Friday Night is Music Night." In addition to her performances, she is also working on several other projects.
