Born on February 27, 1937, Barbara Babcock is an American character actress and Emmy Award winner. She is best known for her roles as Grace Gardner in "Hill Street Blues" and Dorothy Jennings in "Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman". While Babcock did not have notable achievements in the film industry, she was a true television star, with two Emmy nominations and one win.
Early Life and Education
Barbara was born in the United States but spent a significant part of her childhood in Tokyo, Japan. Her father, Conrad Stanton Babcock Jr., was a general in the American army, which led to Barbara spending a considerable amount of time abroad. She learned to speak Japanese before English. After returning to the States, Barbara attended Wellesley College, where she was classmates with future actress and model Ali MacGraw.
Acting Career
Barbara Babcock's acting career began with roles in television series. From 1956 to 1967, she appeared in various shows, including a year-long stint in the iconic sci-fi series "Star Trek". In 1968, Babcock made her big-screen debut in the MGM film "Day of the Evil Gun". She went on to star in movies such as "Heaven with a Gun", "Bang the Drum Slowly", "Chosen Survivors", "The Black Marble", "Back Roads", and "The Lords of Discipline".
From 1978 to 1981, Babcock played Liz Craig in the soap opera "Dallas". In 1981, she won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for her role as Grace Gardner in the police procedural series "Hill Street Blues". She portrayed the character for five years, appearing in only 16 episodes. Alongside her television work, Babcock also appeared in other projects. In 1984, she played the lead role in the short-lived series "The Four Seasons".
From 1993 to 1998, Barbara Babcock portrayed Dorothy Jennings in the series "Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman". This role earned her another Emmy nomination. In 1994, she was included in People magazine's list of the "50 Most Beautiful People in the World".
Since 2004, Babcock has not appeared in any films or television shows.
